STATIONS

2016 - Stations is a multi-channel video installation made with footage shot simultaneously from 10 windows of a moving train. In 2016 I began regularly shooting video out of the window on the New York subway during my daily commute. I became fascinated with the abstract flashes of light and color that were captured as the train barreled through the tunnels. In order to create a multi-channel piece, I asked passengers on the subway to shoot video out of the windows of the train using their own cell phones. I handed out flyers and explained how the footage would be incorporated into a larger video installation. The volunteers shared their videos with me, and I synchronized the footage to create a multi-faceted view from the moving train. The project culminated in a 70 ft x 24 ft 10-channel video installation at The Mattress Factory Museum in Pittsburgh, PA., When taken together, the moving images simulate the architecture of a train. As the train slows down and pulls into each station, the imagery shifts from rhythmic abstraction to scenes of everyday life. The installation synthesizes the individual passengers points of view into a unified and collective experience.
